Summer Day Quilt

Summer Night Quilt

Here are two versions of the quilt: one with a white background (Summer Day) and the other in gray (Summer Night). Though, I encourage you to come up with something unique and special to you.

The quilt finishes 70” x 70” with 16” x 16” blocks.

Materials:
3 3/4 yards of gray (night version) or white (day version) for block background, sashing, and borders
1/2 yard of red for border
Approximately 15 Fat Quarters
4 1/2 yards for backing
2/3 yard for binding

Expectation:
There’s a month to select a color scheme and pull fabric. We’ll be starting June 8th. You can expect detailed illustrations to walk you through the block assembly process. We will visit a block each week for 9 weeks. The 10th week, August 10th, is scheduled to finish the quilt top.

If you are unable to participate at the time of posting, no worries, you can still play along when you can.

Techniques:
You’ll learn techniques to construct flying geese, hour glass, pinwheel seam allowances, cutting fabric with templates, and inset seams.

Giveaway:
Yes, for coming back, there will be a giveaway each week. Check out the first week’s post for details.

Share:
Use my facebook page to share and post images of your sampler. I'd love to see your interpretation of this quilt. Also, this is the place to share tips and techniques to ensure the absolute success in constructing the quilt.

Are you ready? Excited? Let’s plan out fabric.

  1. Hi Sandra,
I think I'm a beginning quilter even though, many years ago, I took a hand-pieced, hand-quilted quilt-as-you-go class and made 4 sampler blocks out of the 12 planned. It's been a long time, I don't think I retained much -- so it's back to GO (without passing or $200) for me.

I haven't really used FB (to be a good example for my kids) so I'm struggling with that part of this qal. Is it even possible without using FB? Maybe we can chat about this if it's going to be a problem.

Do you have suggestions about fabrics: prints or solids or both, color story pitfalls ...? Color is an area I need to work on, so any help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks for heading this qal. Later then, Kath

  3. Hi. Nice to meet you, neighbor.

No, there is no requirement to be on FB. We can definitely dialogue just the way we are now or feel free to email me.

    Re: Color
That's quite the loaded question. Given, I don't know your style. I'd say research fabric lines that speak to you. Fabric lines will take the hard part of picking a scheme for you, plus lines will have a variety of scale to make sure your have that extra oomph to your quilt. Or, find a fabric you love, and use the color codes on the selvage to build your color scheme. I tend to mix solids and prints.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Sandra
