Tutorial Christmas Hat Ornament

Hello Friends,

I'm Sandra Clemons and I'm one of Michael Miller's licensed fabric designer. You can find my fabrics here on the Michael Miller website or head over to my website to learn about me. I have a new fabric collection, called Hero, coming out this month. You're going to love it. It's about empowering young girls in a superhero theme. I've been posting tons of images to show you the wonderful projects you can make with Hero. Be sure to follow me on instagram and facebook to stay on the in and get sneak peeks along the way.

I'm delighted to take part in the Michael Miller Holiday Blog Hop. My contribution are these adorable Christmas Hat Ornaments. They size to 3" x 3". It is perfect as a quick project to adorn your Christmas tree or gift away to your loved ones.

You'll need a basic knowledge of foundation paper piecing.

The red fabric comes from my In Bloom fabric collection and the dark background comes from my Believe fabric collection.

Supplies and Cutting Instructions
- Red fabric sized 3" x 3" (A)
- Dark fabric sized 10" x 10"
     - Cut 2 pieces 3" x 3" (B and C)
     - Cut 2 pieces 1 1/2" x 4" (D and H)
     - Cut 2 pieces 1" x 1" (G and F)
     - Cut 1 piece 4" x 4" (ornament back)
- White fabric sized 1 1/2" x 4" (E)
- Binding fabric size 2 1/2" x 20"
- 1 Pompom
- 4" x 4" of scrap batting
- Rotary cutting and measuring supplies
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Baker's twine 6" long
- Craft Glue
- Pins
- Iron and ironing surface
- Optional: embellishments

1. Download the template. For your convenience, I did include 4 patterns to make 4 ornaments. However, the Supplies and Cutting Instructions above consist of 1 ornament.

2. Foundation paper piece the pattern in alphabetic order. A is for the red fabric. E is for the white brim of the hat. The rest are for the dark fabric background.

3. Once you've stitched pieces A through D and E through H. Trim. Remove paper. Then sew together the top and bottom of the hat. The hat measures 3 1/2" x 3 1/2".

4. Place the batting under the front with batting against the wrong side of the front. Quilt as desired. (I choose not to quilt with the back fabric, but you may choose too.) Add backing fabric of the ornament, trim to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2".

5. Add binding. I machined stitched the binding to the front and then handstitched the binding to the back. When I wrapped the binding to the back, I was able to place the baker's twine. The baker's twine is to hang your ornament on the tree. I placed my twine in the center and handstitched it into place as I handstitched the binding.

6. Use craft glue to attached the pompom to the hat. Add any embellishments as desired.

Go on, it is your turn to make these adorable ornament. Be sure to share your project with me on instagram and facebook.

Make it Blossom,
